Safety Light talks about...
 Kids' Phone Safety

Kids'  Safety is First!

If someone calls that you do not know,
 remember the following guidelines:

  • Do you have your local police number on your cell phone or written down and stored beside your home telephone?  If not, do so right away.

  • Never give out your name, age, or anyone's name or age.

  • Never give out your address or phone number, or anyone's  address or phone number.

  • If name, age, or address information is being requested, hand the phone to your parents or if your parents are not nearby,  tell the caller that you can't talk right now and hang up.  That kind of information is no one's business so do not feel bad about hanging up.

  • NEVER tell a caller that your parents are not home and NEVER tell anyone you are home alone.  If the caller persists in asking you questions like this, call the police immediately.

  • If someone calls asking you to meet them, let your parents know right away, if it is someone who does not normally call you.  do not go alone!

  • If someone calls to say there is an emergency and that you need to go somewhere right away, call the police.  The police will find out if there is an emergency or not.  Always have the local police phone number nearby in case you need it.  Do not be afraid to call the police.  They will understand because they want you to be safe.

  • If you repeatedly get calls without anyone answering, check your telephone directory or call your local phone company for rules on tracing phone calls.  See if your area offers the  *57   trace feature.
    Please note that you
WILL BE CHARGED for EACH time that you use *57
However, safety is first....so factor that in over cost.
The following are steps in the *57 feature - be sure to check with your local phone company to make sure your steps are the same.  Some area procedures may vary.

1)  Call is received.
2)  Let it ring 2 times.
3)  Answer the call and if no one answers back, hang up the phone.
4)  Immediately pick up the phone and at the dial tone key in *57.
5)  If prompted - press 1 - or follow the automated procedures given.
6)  You will be told if the call was successfully traced or not.  If successful follow steps 7 & 8.
7)  LOG the date and time of the call immediately after step 6 or, better yet, before answering the phone.
8)  Call your local telephone company and report the trace.  They will provide you with your next steps.
  • Report any phone sexual advances to your parents and the local police right away.  If they keep calling use the trace feature and/or immediately call the police.  Safety is first and you have every right to feel safe.  Help stamp out these kind of people by demanding your right to safety and notifying your local police.
